Last week we hosted our second preschool class. Daddy taught this time!
Our theme wasn't quite as tight, but it still went over realy well!
We asked the kids to each bring a dry food good for a small food drive. I tried talking to Colin about sharing food and hunger before class but it's hard to say if he got any of it. You never know, so it's never too early to start talking about principles that are important to your family!
When the kids arrived we had our snack and dove into circle time.
Gavin did awesome. He worked hard to engage the kids and keep things upbeat and fun. In circle time, we talked about the wather and Gavin read "Don't Spill the Milk".
After circle itme, we headed to the kitchen for some 'cooking' practice, complete with hats!
We mixed salt, flour, and water to make salt dough!
Afterwards, we made a few handprints, more on that in a later post!
Our next activity was cheerio treading. We threaded fruit loops onto a pipe cleaner. Some of the kids really got into this activity. Colin not so much. He ate a handful of fruit loops, put one on his pipe cleaner and was pretty much done.
Someone else thought it was a candy necklace!
It was so fun watching the kids focus on an activity so carefuly!
We ended with some walking/jumping/crawling and closing circle time. The kids seemed to have a great time and hopefully they all learned a little something too.

Preschool at the Griffins
Last week we hosted the Ladera Learners at our house for the first time. I am scheduled to host May and have already started planning, so I had to be a lot quicker getting ready in two weeks for December!

Since we had the little houses, I went with house/home as a theme. Our sancks were little houses! :)
Snack time is always popular! After snack, we did our craft/ activity. We cut out family members and houses out of felt. Each child picked out the members of their household and stuck them on the house. It was really interesting to see how the kids view their families. For example, most of the kids with a baby sibling put the baby with mommy. (The exception being Colin, who put the baby with daddy.) We actually had so much fun with the felt, that I think we are going to get Colin a little felt board for Christmas.
We made a patch of playdoh for Colin birthday party and it was fun and the kids really enjoyed it so I decided to make up a second patch for the party. I didn't like how the first one smelled, so I added lavendar essential oil to the second patch. It came out awesome! The kids had a good time laying with it.
We closed with Three Bill Goats Fluff and our circle time songs.
It took a lot more energy than I had anticipated, but the kids did great and we had so much fun!

Preschool fieldtrips
Last week was a crazy week for the Ladera Learners. We had two field trips to two different farms!
The first was Centennial Farm in Costa Mesa.
| Oxen! |
We have actually been here before because it's part of the fair grounds. I didn't know they were open year round to visit! It's awesome because it's way less crowded was way less hot and much cheaper and easier than a fair trip!
Colin liked the animals, just like he did at the fair.
They had live demonstrations for the kids to watch of a driver with oxen and milking a cow.
There was also a stand for the kids to plant a radish seed! Look at all of our little farmers!
The chickens were a big hit.
They had four day old baby chicks and after some coxing Colin finally decided to pet one.
We climbed a huge pile of pumpkins for these cute pictures.
| This was a close as we got to a group photo at the top! |
Snack time is always a favorite. This was extra special because Grandpa came with us!
Busy and fun fall days!

Lil Ladera Learners: Brush brush them!
I am so disappointed that I missed all of Colin's preschool meetings last week. It's been crazy around here. First we had a sick baby, then work, then a dentist field trip.
I thought the idea to take the kids to the dentist was a fantastic idea, but because of my personal feelings towards the dentist, we decided it would be better if it was a daddy outing!
Dr. Fatehi showing us how to brush our teeth.
After the trip, the kids went to a park to play and eat their snacks.
In addition to a balloon, a new toothbrush and toothpaste, Colin came home with a renewed enjoyment of brushing his teeth!
As a thank you, I made this for the kids to fill out at school tomorrow.

Ladera Learners First Field Trip: Mission Viejo Library
So I am really loving our preschool setting for Colin. This week we had our first field trip!
We headed to the Mission Viejo library. We met in the grass out front for snacks and to get some energy out.
The boys especially seemed to need to burn off some energy!
Colin made a new friend, too!
Inside, the kids did fantastic! We didn't realize it was story time day and there were A LOT of kids around, but our group did great. They sat down and colored together for a while. Then some of the kids read while others played in the kids part of the library. I really loved getting to interact with all of the kids in a new setting. It was also awesome having the kids in matching shirts because it was super easy to tell which kids were in our group and keep an eye on everyone. Many of the moms (myself included) were amazed to see our balls of energy sit down and focus on an activity. I attribute this to the power of a group setting.
Yay for Pre-preschool!

Ladera Learners
A few months ago, a mom in my Ladera group suggested starting a homeschool preschool program. This idea fit perfectly in one of my and Gaivn's concerns for Colin. We love that we are home with the boys, but we realize that Colin's getting to an age where he needs to be learning to interact with his peers on a more regular basis. We talked briefly about sending him to preschool or some type of day program, but we aren't ready. The idea of a homeschool environment seemed like a great solution!
We started meeting and formed a group of 8. The Lil Ladera Learners. After meeting a few times, I realized there were several other huge benefits to the group. One of the major ones is exposing to Colin to the types of activities that I wouldn't think of or wouldn't have interest in doing. Another is the idea of a better division of labor. Gavin and I often prepare activites for Colin, but it's pretty annoying to spend an hour getting an activity ready that he spends 3 minutes on. With a group, it's about the same amount of work, but more opportunity for it to be enjoyed. Also, I've noticed that in a group, Colin seems to spend more time because he sees the other kids participating.
During our first week, Colin did way better than I was anticipating. It's not that I thought he would be horrible, I was just concerned that the entire thing might be a little bit over his head. It wasn't. All of the kids seemed a little cautious at first. The younger group, which has been Colin and two little girls, more than the older group. Colin also participated really well in all of the activities. He sat at the table and ate his snack. He listened to the stories, he stacked blocks, painted, did puzzles and sang. He 'shared' all of his blocks with one of his tablemates.

I am really excited about this opportunity. I think it will amazing to watch Colin grow and learn with a group of kids his age. I am so grateful that Gavin and I have the opportunity to be a part of this group.
